Group Exercise Programs, Free and Fee-Related:

The KV YMCA offers its members over 80 group exercise classes weekly, between its Augusta and Manchester locations, including its aqua fitness classes.

There is no need to sign up in advance for these classes, just show up!  All fitness levels and ages 13 and up are welcome in any class; instructors will give modifications as needed.  We recommend you cross-train and sample from all of these on a regular basis, convenient to your schedule to keep your bodyguessing and improving!

Active Older Adults

Our Active Older Adult Programs include a variety of "Land" Classes (at both campuses) and "Aqua" Classes (at our Augusta campus in the Pools). All classes are FREE of charge to KV YMCA members. Aquatic Programs

Aqua Cardio & Core
Session: Starting January 2010; Ongoing
Location: Family Fun Pool
Time: Friday, 12:15-1 p.m.
Instructor: Eric Yandian

Take a break from higher impact cardio exercise on land and cross-train in the warm pool.  You'll get a message on your joints while burning calories and using your trunk muscles as you combine athletic moves and kickboxing drills.  The water is your opponent!


Aqua Fit I

This low-impact workout in the shallow end of the pool emphasizes balance, coordination and flexibility, and is sure to improve physical, social and mental well-being!


Aqua Fit II

Tuesday/Thursday, 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Aqua Fit II classes are geared toward those who want to get a little more vigor out of a pool workout.  Each includes a warm up, cardio section and cool down, followed by muscle strength/endurance and core activation exercises using various equipment for buoyancy and water resistance.


Aqua Walking/Running
Session: Starting January 2010; Ongoing

Time: Tuesday, 8-9 a.m.

Did you know that 30 minutes of water walking can equal two hours of walking on land? This is a deep water workout, for which participants wear aqua-jogger belts for vertical stability. Class format is interval style and includes familiar athletic movements that are easy on the joints but allow you to work as hard as you'd like!


Aqua Zumba
Session: Starting March 2010; Ongoing

Time: Mondays, 10:30-11:15 a.m.

This new format features both Latin moves and Latin music.  You will get a fun and different cardio workout!


Joint Ventures
Session: Starting January 2010; Ongoing

Time: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, FThursday, Friday, 9-9:30 a.m.
Instructor: Kim Campbell, Eric Yandian

These classes, designed by the YMCA and the Arthritis Foundation, focus exclusively on range of motion exercises for the total body in the shallow end of the pool.  Participation is non-stressful and improves daily mobility and flexibility as it decreases joint stiffness and helps with pain management.  These classes are also ideal for members with fibromyalgia, muscular sclerosis, or other neuromuscular complications.


SilverSneakers® SilverSplash
Session: Ongoing

Friday, 6:30-7:30 a.m.

Activate your aqua exercise urge for variety!  SilverSplash offers lots of fun and shallow moves to improve agility, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance.  No swimming ability is required, and a special SilverSneakers kickboard is used to develop strength, balance and coordination.


Land Programs

Zumba Gold

 A Zumba workout tailored toward the senior fitness enthusiast-fun and zesty but not too fast paced and intimidating.

 


Cardio Fitball

Instructor: Trish Hanley-Goodwin/Nikki Ramage

This class is 30 minutes of freee style aerobic exercise that seques into lots of dynamic stretching, core strengthening, and other toning exercisies with the stability ball.  It is different but has lots of functional fitness benefits - give it a try!


Fit For All I

This class consists of low impact aerobics, toning, and improving balance and flexibility.  Lower impact than Fit For All II and a good class to start out with.


Fit For All II

Wednesday, 9:00-10:00 a.m.

This class consists of high/low aerobics, muscle strengthening, improving balance and flexibility.   A more rigorous workout than Fit For All I.


Happy Hearts Cardiac Wellness

This is an early morning cardiac wellness program offering guided use of the Fitness Center on Monday and Wednesday mornings, and pool exercise classes on Friday mornings.  Social volleyball in the gym concludes Monday and Wednesday programs.  Doctor's referral and Exercise Rx is required.

A resistance training class that incorporates free weights, isometrics, tubing and standing dynamic movement combinations that will challenge you to bring on your best posture and body alignment, and achieve muscle tone.

Pure Posture "Plus" offers the same as above but incororates cardio floor calisthenics throughout the class.


SilverSneakers® Cardio Circuit

Instructor:

Combine fun and fitness to increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance power with a standing circuit workout.  Upper body strength work with hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and a ball is alternated with non-impact aerobic choreography.  A chair is offered for support , stretching, and relaxation exercises.


SilverSneakers® I (Muscle Strength and Range of Movement)

Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscle strength, range of movement, and activity for daily living skills.  Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and a ball are offerered for resistance and a chair is used for seated and/or standing support.


SilverSneakers® YogaStretch
Session: Ongoing

Time: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 10:45-11:30 a.m.
Instructor: Melissa Michael

YogaStretch will move your whole body through a complete series of seated and standing yoga poses. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of postures designed to increase flexibility, balance and range of movement. Restorative breathing exercises and final relaxation will promote stress reduction and mental clarity.
